Today I’d like to start this blog with a question: Have you ever tried to call an organisation (it could be your bank, favourite charity or just your favourite sock dispensary) for free? I assume so, 0800 numbers have been all the rage for many years now. However these numbers typically require you to be near a landline phone, not always convenient on the go.
Mobile operators have typically levied rather large charges when you try and dial a 0800 number from your mobile or just block it altogether. Definitely not the most convenient solution for a number designed to be free.
Thankfully this frustrating situation is now changing with one mobile operator pushing change forward. Mobile operator Three have announced that all 0800 numbers will be free to dial for their customers. They have also stated that they will be capping the costs to dial other numbers in the 08 range.
UK telecoms regulator Ofcom released a statement saying that by June 2015 all 0800 numbers will be free to call from your mobile phone regardless of network. This has been welcomed by consumer groups such as Which; customers will no longer be stung by unexpected charges.
As a cheap calls provider we always welcome news that saves you the consumer money and we hope this trend continues.
