4 Things You Must Do in Ljubljana!

A historically rich city, Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, has so much to offer. We’ve created a list of our 4 favourite things to do whilst visiting this fabulous city…

  1. Get lost in the old town – Located in the South of the city, the old town is small enough to explore thoroughly on foot and full of architectural detail. As well as taking in all the history down the oldest street in Ljubljana, Stari Trg, you can also explore Konressni Trg square which is home to Ljubljana University at one end and the Roman Emona at the other end with the Zvezda park in the centre with all its historical attractions. Keep your eyes out for Usruline Church, the Robba Fountain, the Old Town Hall, Preseren Trg (the central square), the Franciscan Church, the Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, and the beautiful Ljubljana Cathedral, too!
  1. Visit Ljubljana Castle – The castle of Ljubljana is the biggest and most popular one of its kind in this historical city. Originally built in the 11th century, the castle was completely redesigned in the 15th century (demolished and rebuilt, actually). Over the centuries it has also been used as a military hospital, jail, and more recently it was home to ostracised citizens of Ljubljana up until 1963! Now visitors enjoy it as a tourist attraction, with a café in the courtyard and even concerts, plays and open air cinema viewings on offer throughout the summer.

  1. Explore the central market – There’s no better way to get the cultural feel of a city than to wander around an authentic market. Built in 1939, this market stretches between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge and comprises both a covered and open market full of food stalls. You’ll find locally grown produce including plants, flowers, breads, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, herbs, fish, meat and more!
  1. Hang out by the river – Ljubljanica is a most fascinating river; if you’re a history fan, hold on tight! The river dates back to the Roman period and is one of Slovenia’s most important archaeological sites! Previous excavations have uncovered objects that date back to prehistory right up to the early modern period. If that wasn’t cool enough, archaeologists believe that Ljubljanica once held a cult status…! These days you can take a leisurely stroll through the weeping willow-lined terraced walk, hire a canoe and paddle through the city centre or stop off in one of the many lovely cafés.

We’ve only scratched the surface with our 4 things to do in Ljubljana; this wonderful city has a whole lot more to offer, so why not go and explore it for yourself!
