A bustling city that’s a favourite with tourists, Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is a whirlwind of lights, sounds and colours that feed the mind and soothe the soul. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of 4 things you absolutely must do whilst in Kathmandu…
- Discover Durbar Square – with temples dating back to the 12th century, Durbar Square has been popular amongst locals (and tourists!) for hundreds of years. No trip to Kathmandu would be complete without taking in these stunning temples and meeting the incredible people who live and worship here.
- Explore the Langtang National Park – established in 1976 as Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park, Langtang covers a staggering 1,700 square km and contains climatic regions ranging from sub-tropical to alpine! If you’re lucky you might spot a black bear, a monkey or even a red panda amongst the stunning flora!
- Meet the holy monkeys at the Swayambhunath complex (aka Monkey Temple) – created back in the 5th century, this incredible complex includes a stupa (Buddhist shrine), temples, a museum, a library and a Tibetan monastery! Despite the stupa being re-gilded with 20kg of gold in 2010, the holy monkeys are a real side attraction for visitors to enjoy whilst admiring this special site!
- Lose yourself in Thamel – this wonderfully colourful area of Kathmandu is home to every shop and market imaginable; perfect for retail therapy, souvenir purchasing or maybe even a tattoo!
But that’s not all! This wonderful city has a whole lot more to offer, so why not go and explore it for yourself!
