Despite being a fairly modern city having been completed in 1960, Brasília is a hive of culture attracting foodies, architecture buffs and nightlife lovers from all over the world. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of 4 things that you absolutely must do whilst in Brasília, the capital of Brazil!
- Have a wander over the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge – Named after the former president of Brazil, the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge is 3,900ft long and 79ft wide and is regarded as an architectural gem! Completed in 2002, the bridge crosses Lake Paranoá and is a stunning sight at nighttime with its display of lights reflecting on the water; pedestrians and cyclists can make use of two car-free walkways!
- Walk around beautiful Lake Paranoá – whether you’re looking to do a spot of sailing, leisurely rowing or you’d enjoy a whizz around on jet skiis, Lake Paranoá is the place to go! An artificial lake created to increase the humidity of the region, these days it offers lots of water activities, including wakeboarding and windsurfing as well as an insight into how Brasília’s first constriction workers lived; visible from a depth of 10m, the lake has preserved their homes under the water and you can see personal objects, walls, floors of houses, ceramics and kitchen objects! Those who’d like to take it easy can enjoy the many restaurants, bars and boat tours around the lake.
- Visit the cathedral of Brasília – This is no ordinary cathedral! Built in 1970, the cathedral of Brasília showcases 16 curved concrete columns which appear to form a ‘crown’. What with its spectacular glass roof, this building is definitely a place of interest for tourists!
- Embark on an adventure in the Parque Nacional de Brasília – there’s no other place to go if you’re a fan of the outdoors! With 69,190 acres to explore and two walking trails to choose from, you might just get to see some of the many protected birds and animals amongst the many different environments. Keep your eyes out for giant armadillos, pampas deer, jaguars, caimans and anacondas to name but a few! Alternatively, why not join the locals for a relaxing soak in the mineral springs!
